Juneau at a glance
Juneau is Alaska's capital and one of the most popular ports on Inside Passage cruise itineraries. Surrounded by mountains and temperate rainforest, it offers immediate access to whale watching, Mendenhall Glacier, and authentic Alaskan culture — all from a walkable downtown pier.
Cruise pier and downtown layout
Most Alaska cruise ships dock along South Franklin Street. From the gangway you can reach souvenir shops, restaurants, the Mount Roberts Tramway, and the Red Dog Saloon within minutes. Tour operators for whale watching and glacier trips typically meet passengers on Franklin Street or at designated hotel pickup points nearby.
- Franklin Street pier — central downtown location
- Mount Roberts Tramway — five-minute walk from main piers
- Alaska State Capitol — short walk north of the cruise district
- Public restrooms and Wi-Fi — available at visitor centres downtown
Getting around on port day
Mendenhall Glacier and whale watching harbours require transport from downtown. Organised shore excursions include pickup and drop-off timed for cruise schedules. Independent travellers can use taxis, rideshare apps, or the Capital Transit bus to the glacier visitor centre.
Auke Bay, where many whale watching boats depart, is a short drive from downtown. Allow extra time for traffic on days when multiple large ships are in port.
Weather and what to pack
Southeast Alaska is temperate rainforest — rain is common even in summer. Layer waterproof and windproof clothing, wear sturdy walking shoes, and bring binoculars for whale watching. Temperatures typically range from 50–65°F (10–18°C) in the cruise season.
Return-to-ship essentials
Confirm your all-aboard time on the cruise app, not just the daily newsletter. Build at least 45 minutes of buffer before departure, especially after glacier tours or whale watching cruises. Keep your cruise card and a charged phone with you throughout port day.
